ABOUT OUR CONGREGATION
Bld.Mother Mariam Thresia
The Congregation of Holy Family has been founded by Blessed Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan, in a remote village called Punthenchira, in Thrissur(Dt) Kerala, in the year 1914.Mother Mariam Thresia, foundress of the Congregation of the Holy Family, was beatifiedon April 9, 2000 by His Holiness Pope John Paul II at St. Peter’s square, Rome. She is the 3rd Indian out of 6 to have been beatified onthe church so far. Beatification in Roman Catholicism is the last stage of Beautification. The beatified person is called " Blessed".
Blessed Mariam Thresia (1876-1926) is commemorated in the church on June 8th. She is one of the modern manifestations of sanctity in our church. From the very beginning of her life she interiorized the suffering of Jesus. In later life she is credited with mystical experiences that deepened her spirituality further. For some time she lived with the sisters who were willing to receive her. But in 1913, she began to live in a prayer house at Puthenchira with the blessing of Bishop. It was later made into a convent dedicated to the Holy Family. Mariam Thresia along with three others made the profession religious vows and invested with the habit . On May 14, 1914, the congregation of the Holy Family was founded.
Rev.Fr.Joseph Vithayathil is the Co-founder of the Congregation.
Bl. Mariam Thresia started probing deep into the mystery of the Holy Family even as a child of three. The agony of the cross was real to her. As a revolutionary of the Lord, she broke asunder the man made fetters of age old conventions and traditions. Even in her teens, along with her three companions, she was seen at the bed side of every broken family and at the back of every addict.
Convinced of the Holiness of Mariam Thresia and the relevance of her mission, Rt.Rev. Dr.John Menachery, though suspicious for a time, finally decided to raise canonically the small community of Mariam Thresia in to the status of a religious Congregation on 14th May 1914.
Thus arose the Congregation of Holy Family in the Heart of the Church, dedicated mainly to families and the destitute. The basic aim is to restore the lost communion with oneself, others and the creator, the individuals, families, society and in the world at large.
At present the Congregation has 1734 sisters living in 201 communities in various parts of India, America, Germany, Ghana and Italy. The thrust of every apostolate performed anywhere at any time is towards family and those in need. The generalate is situated in Mannuthy, Thrissur. There are seven provinces and two vice province at present in the Congregation. The Congregation has been raised the Pontifical Status on the first of August 1978 and its first division in to province has been approved by the Holy See on 15 th November 1978. And was officially declared on 3 rd December 1978.The Cause of Mother Mariam Thresia for Cannonization was presented to Vatican 5th October 1973.
